Crass, Fayme, I

Died: 12 September 2015

Fayme Irene (Kohta) Crass left her mark on this world on 12 September 2015 at the age of 89 years. Her story began in Phelps, WI on 21 October 1926 when she entered the lives of Irene and August Kohta and brother, Rudy.

From an early age, her fierce determination and love for ketchup were evident. This feisty disposition served her well throughout her life. Before she became known as ma and garma, she studied to become an air traffic controller and was employed at Time Incorporated in Chicago as a transcriptionist. In 1949, Donald E Crass convinced her to return to Phelps and marry him.

Together they raised 4 kids, a menagerie of animals and many vegetables to be canned. In her spare time, she worked at the Hess & Evenson store and at the Phelps school as a teacher’s aide, secretary and bookkeeper.

Later in life, she also served as a caretaker for many of her aunts and uncles. Fayme loved a good game of Scrabble or Yahtzee, Reader’s Digest, Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, word searches, watching Suomi Kutsuu on Sundays, cultivating her tiger lilies and collecting wild asparagus. Her sharp wit, fresh egg nog and luunappis will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Crass. She is survived by her children: Russell Crass, Donna (Bill) Sefton, Donald R. Crass, and Ina (Ron) Stachewicz; her grandchildren: April (Jonathan) Halpern, Torry Crass (April Jones), Aaron (Rachel) Sefton, August (Megan) Crass, Donald M. (April) Crass, Justin (Chris) Sefton, Danielle Stachewicz (Michael Modjewski), and Laura (Eric) Spears; and her ten stubborn Finlander great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Phelps Care for treating our truculent Fayme like family.
