Haug, Grace Helena age 89, passed away on 31 January 2013. Grace was born 20 October 1923 in Milwaukee. She was the daughter of Edward and Eleanor Berg. In 1945, after graduating from the Evanston Teacher’s College (currently Northwestern University), she married Thomas Marshall Haug also from Milwaukee. She taught elementary school in Madison while Tom attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin and continued to teach in Philadelphia during Tom’s internship there.
Both Grace and Tom had an abiding love of the outdoors. After they returned to Wisconsin, they began a search for a location where they could both practice medicine and enjoy easy access to hunting, fishing, and wild surroundings. They settled on Rhinelander and moved here in 1949. However, their stay was cut short when Tom was activated in 1951 during the Korean War. Grace spent the next two years managing the family of first one and then two boys on a busy Marine base in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
In 1953, Grace and Tom returned to Rhinelander to resume their life in northern Wisconsin. This remained Grace’s home for the remainder of her life. She was active in the First Congregational Church, PEO, and the many activities of her children. Her family was completed in 1954 with the addition of a daughter to balance the two boys.
Grace took particular joy in Soo Lake, a property that she and Tom shared with their children and with dear friends for five decades. Her pleasure, as she helped construct a screen house there, remains a fond memory. Throughout her life, she continued a love of northern Wisconsin and of the wild creatures that attended her bird feeders and crossed her path at Soo Lake.
Grace was a kind and gentle soul who took immeasurable joy in her family and friends. A memorial service for Grace was held at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Grace is survived by her three children, Elizabeth Ann Haug and David Thomas Haug of Rhinelander and Dr. Peter John Haug of Salt Lake City, Utah. She has four grandchildren, Greta Grace, Jennifer, Thomas, and Laura.
Grace is listed on page 211 in the 4th edition of the Seidemann Family Tree Book.
